Who it's for

Not just nannies

Anyone paid to work in a home is a household employee. The API calculates taxes for all of them — same endpoint, same accuracy.

Nanny

Full-time, part-time, or live-in. If you pay $3,000+ a year, the API calculates Social Security, Medicare, FUTA, and state taxes automatically.

Housekeeper

House cleaners are W-2 employees, not 1099 contractors. The API handles their taxes the same way — pass the state and wages, get the breakdown.

Read the guide

Senior Caregiver

A home aide or companion counts as a household employee. Same API call, same tax engine — and their wages may be deductible as a medical expense.

Read the guide

Family Member

Paying a parent or sibling? Some family members are exempt from certain taxes. The API accounts for relationship-based exemptions automatically.

Other Staff

Cooks, personal assistants, gardeners, estate managers, au pairs — if they're paid $3,000+ a year to work in a home, the same tax rules apply.

FAQ

Questions about the API

Use NannyKeeper's REST API: POST /api/v1/calculate with your state, annual wages, and pay frequency. The response includes a complete breakdown of Social Security, Medicare, FUTA, state unemployment, and income taxes. Free tier: 50 requests/day.
For 2026, if you pay a household employee $3,000 or more per year, you must pay employer Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) taxes, and file Schedule H with your personal 1040. Some states have lower thresholds: California $750/quarter, New York $500/quarter, DC $500/quarter.
Yes — the free tier includes 50 API requests per day for tax calculations and threshold checks. No credit card required. Paid tiers ($10-18/month) unlock payroll processing, document generation (W-2, pay stubs), and direct deposit.
Install via npx: add @nannykeeper/mcp-server to your Claude Desktop config with your API key as an environment variable. The server provides calculate_nanny_taxes and check_threshold tools that AI agents can use in conversation.
Yes — the Professional tier ($30/month + $6/employer) supports up to 50 employers and permits resale with "Powered by NannyKeeper" attribution. For white-label access without attribution, contact hello@nannykeeper.com.
All 50 US states plus DC. The API calculates federal taxes (Social Security, Medicare, FUTA, income tax) and state-specific taxes (state income tax, state unemployment, SDI, PFL, and local taxes where applicable). State configs are updated each tax year.
The free tier uses the same tax engine as our paid payroll product — same rates, same rules. The one limitation: free calculations assume zero year-to-date wages (single-period estimate). Mid-year calculations may differ slightly because SS wage base exhaustion and FUTA caps depend on YTD data. For ongoing accuracy, use a paid plan with YTD tracking.
You get a 429 response with a Retry-After header. Limits reset at midnight UTC. The response also includes X-RateLimit-Remaining and X-RateLimit-Reset headers on every request so you can track usage proactively.
